Honour Woven Into Every Thread: The Legacy of Medal Ribbons

Every medal ribbon has a story, weaving together tales of bravery, commitment, and duty. Beyond just fabric, these ribbons represent the highest honours in both military and civilian achievements, like the prestigious OBE. They’re a colourful testament to the spirit of those who’ve stood up for what matters, worn with a mix of pride and a deep sense of history.

A Tradition of Excellence

Rooted deeply in British military history, medals and their ribbons are not merely personal accolades but embody the nation’s gratitude towards its servicemen and women. It’s a tradition steeped in protocol, where each ribbon’s placement and display on a uniform is guided by strict regulations, emphasising the unique distinction of each award. These decorations are worn close to the heart as a mark of deep-seated respect.

The Wearing of Medals and Ribbons

Signifying more than personal achievement, each ribbon tells a story of valour, loyalty, and dedication. The British Armed Forces dictate that these decorations, whether medals or the ribbons representing them, should only adorn the attire of the honourees. Displayed over the left breast, the arrangement of ribbons is meticulously ordered, with precedence giving the place of honour nearest to the heart. Additionally, it is acceptable and customary for close family members to wear the medals of their relatives, but these should be worn on the right breast. This practice began post-World War I, initially by war widows, and has since extended to all family members of those who were issued military medals.

During state functions, royal engagements, and ceremonial occasions, these emblems are displayed with pride. Adhering to specific dress codes, the wearing of medals and ribbons underscores the gravity of the occasion, bridging the past with the present in a continuous thread of national pride and remembrance.

The Legacy of David Wright

Highlighting our connection to this rich military tradition, we proudly share the story of WWII veteran David Wright, a revered figure whose medals and ribbons not only symbolise his valorous contributions but also serve as a lasting legacy within our company. As the father of our director, Robin Wright, and a pivotal influence on the founding of Wyedean Weaving, his decorations are a cherished part of our history, proudly displayed at our head office in Bridgehouse Mills, Haworth.
